- 1). Modify a wool overcoat to more closely resemble a colonial-era soldier's coat. A short overcoat that is navy blue, black, camel, blue or red works well. Remove the buttons from the coat.
- 2). Cut two strips of felt about 6 inches wide and as long as the length of the wool coat from beneath the collar to just above the cuffs of the sleeves. Sew each strip of felt to each side of the coat along the front opening.
- 3). Paint the 18 coat buttons gold or silver using enamel paint. Let dry. Sew the buttons to the coat evenly spaced over the felt on each side of the coat's opening.
- 4). Fold the front and back of your hat towards the top your hat. Using a needle and thread, sew the two parts of the hat in place. Sew a bow onto the front and right side of the hat.
- 5). Put on a large-fitting white dress shirt and khaki or black canvas pants. Tuck the shirt into your pants. Wear black dress socks and tuck the pant legs into your socks. Wear plain black of dark brown loafers or oxford dress shoes.
- 6). Put on your colonial coat and hat.
