- 1). Consider the cost of the ticket itself. It is not cheap. This is why it's smartest to plan ahead. If you have not already gone the scholarship route, apply for this ticket by requesting an application. Send it back to the folks of Black Rock City. If they accept it, you get a lower price ticket at the door. The next cheapest option is the low-income ticket. If you're not a low-income burner, buy your ticket as soon as tickets go on sale. If you don't delay, you can get one at a good price.
- 2). Considering the high prices of renting vehicles and gas, carpooling is the best way to make your way to Black Rock City. Splitting the cost of transportation between four friends can dramatically cut it down. If all of your friends already have rides (or you are in need of one), hook up with other burners by placing an ad online or in your local newspaper.
- 3). Go to an army surplus store for supplies such as tents, sleeping bags and goggles. You can save on your supplies by as much as half simply by shopping there instead of mart stores. They usually have a surprising amount of useful items, including canteens, camping cookware and affordable warm coats.
- 4). Try shopping at your local dollar store for food and water. These stores are rapidly expanding to provide all sorts of quality food products. You could get all the snacks you need there for less than twenty bucks.
- 5). Be smart about getting alcohol. There is no better place to go to than BevMo (Beverages and More). Handles of hard alcohol go for very little money at these stores, This is also the place to go for all of your mixing needs. Cheers!
- 6). For some of us, shopping for costumes can be a pricey and slippery slope. Instead of shopping at vintage or costumes stores, start at thrift shops. Most thrift shops will have at least a few really amazing items.
- 7). Get a shade structure. It's unbearable to be without one at Burning Man. Unfortunately, most shade structures have a high price tag. However, E-Z UP makes an affordable model that can definitely weather the wild sandstorms of Burning Man with the help of some strong rope. You can create additional shade by tying old sheets and fabric to the poles and ropes.
