
A weekend long event is commencing today in Squamish, British Columbia and it's the Kite Clash!
From today, August 1, 2014 to Sunday, August 3, 2014, top kiteboarders coming from Canada and USA will compete in 3 disciplines: Best Trick, Big Air, and Freestyle. The Freestyle division will decide who will win the Canadian National title.
Now on its second year, the Kite Clash also has more categories to accommodate the assortment of skills the participants have. In the Freestyle event, there will be a Junior division (those who are 18 years and younger), Men's division, Master's division (those 35 years old and older), and a Women's division. Both the Best Trick and Big Air events will have Men's and Women's divisions.
In the Big Air event, the judging criteria will be: 70% height, 15% technicality and 15% style. For kiters to be counted, they must land their jumps. Heats will have 4 riders and each one will be identified through different color jerseys.
While in the Best Trick event, everyone is invited to showcase tricks they have never tried or those they have practiced for so long. The kiteboarder who performs the most extreme and wicked shall win the title. There will be two attempts given to each rider.
Finally, the Freestyle event is one you definitely should not miss! Top riders will compete for the national title so it will surely be intense. The judging criteria will be similar to that of the PKRA: technicality of their tricks, kite position, and execution. In the 7 minute long contest, kiteboarders will have 12 tricks attempts and will be judged on the best ones they execute.
For the first day, which is today, August 1, 2014, registration will happen at 10:00 AM. Each event will have a registration fee of $20 and it will comprise of the cost of the event jerseys, set up and trophies. If you are under 18, a legal guardian must be present while registering.
At 11:30 AM will be the skippers meeting. Afterwards, the best possible start for the Best Trick event will be by 12:30 PM. It will then be followed by the Junior Freestyle event at 3:00 PM.
By Saturday, the skippers meeting will be at 10:00 AM, then the Men's Freestyle event at 11:00 AM. The Women's Freestyle event will commence after the Men's.
On the last day, Sunday, August 3, 2014, the skippers meeting will start at 11:00 AM. By 12:00 noon is the first possible start of the Big Air event. The awards ceremony will then be by 4:00 PM.
The event location is in Squamish, British Colombia and it is halfway between downtown Vancouver and Whistler's high alpine. Water sports like kiteboarding are popular in Squamish and it is regarded as the top kiteboarding location in western Canada.
With all these information, the Kite Clash event this year will expect to host over 60 participants coming from not just Canada.
