- 1). Take the time to inspect some of the previous artwork of that specific artist. Look at any particular detail that may stand out. Identify the different strokes and styles of the artist, then compare it to the art that you will be purchasing.
- 2). Hold up the artwork to the light. Use a magnifying glass to help enlarge signatures and stamps. While holding up the art, use the magnifying glass to look at the back for the artist's signature. The signature is usually located in the lower right-hand corner of the artwork. You should also look for signs of fresh paint or alterations, which may indicate that the art isn't genuine.
- 3). Visit your local library or do a search online to determine if the artwork is a numbered print. Numbered prints usually have digits to indicate the number of prints in the edition as well as to identify that particular art work. Look for a number written in the form of a fraction such as 15/50. The first number indicates the actual print number and the second number is the amount of prints that were produced.
