- 1). Find a body of water in which you can touch the bottom. However, this pool, pond or lake should be deep enough that the water reaches your chest. This will help you learn without the fear of not being able to touch the ground.
- 2). Start floating so your feet aren't touching anymore and begin stroking with your arms. Use your arms so that you are moving up and forward. Many people find it easier to keep their arms right in front of them and make short strokes, much like a dog's, hence the name dog paddle.
- 3). Press your fingers together and cup your hands while stroking. This will give you more leverage in the water and keep you moving without more effort. Think of your arms as little oars that are pushing through the water.
- 4). Kick your legs and keep them loose. Dog paddling is all about making your swimming experience simple. Kicking your legs and remaining loose will propel you forward in the water.
- 5). Adjust your stoke to keep your head above the water. The entire purpose of this style of swimming is simply to keep your head above water. Stroke harder if you begin getting to the point where your chin and face are getting under the water. Crane your neck upward to take in as much oxygen as possible.
