- 1). Locate the jack in the back of the SUV. Lift the rear floor cover and find the jack, the spare and all the jacking tools.
- 2). Buy the appropriate wheel stud for your Highlander. If you aren't sure about the size then wait until you remove it and take it to the auto parts store with you.
- 3). Remove the tire, followed by the calipers and the rotor, to access the hub. Detach the emergency brake if you're working on the rear wheel. If your back brakes are disc, remove them. You also need to remove drum brakes but may additionally need to take off the hub and use a vise to get the stud out with them.
- 4). Inspect the back of the hub for an open space that allows you more access to remove and replace the stud. Make sure you line it up with the stud that you're going to remove.
- 5). Hit the stud with the mallet to remove the stud, and keep hitting until you push it through the opening. Once it's through, slide the new wheel stud into the space to replace it. Put the stud through the hole from the back.
- 6). Use two wheel bolts to seat the stud. Tighten the bolts with the slanted edges facing outward on the end of the stud. Use an impact wrench if you have one to make the job easier. As you tighten the bolts, they pull the stud through and seat it. Stop when the head reaches the back of the hub.
- 7). Finish the job by putting all the parts back on the wheel of your Highlander in the exact order of removal.
