A few people have approached via Twitter asking for advice on how to transform their bathrooms, how to give them a new personality, a new lease of life, without a complete overhaul or an extensive and expensive renovation project. Well, I have been asked this before, and my advice is the same as it has always been: Bathroom furniture. Ill explain:
As long as you have taken good care of the basics in your bathroom, such as having clean or new tile grouting and waterproof sealant, and your walls are freshly painted white or a light pastel shade, then you have the foundations in place for your transformation. The vast majority of bathroom suites manufactured in the last ten or fifteen have been glossy white, and as long as your suite is stained or badly damaged, and is performing well, then there is no real reason to exchange that at present.
Furniture can play such a key role in transforming your bathroom for several reasons. Firstly, we all tend to accumulate toiletries, cosmetics and cleaning supplies over time, and without sufficient storage space, all of mismatched and multi-coloured bottles and packages will eventually overwhelm any bathroom, leaving it feeling cramped and cluttered and detracting from whatever aesthetic you may be trying to achieve. Sufficient storage will allow you to keep all of your surfaces clear and calm, whilst your daily essentials will be neatly organised and categorised and within easy reach.
Furniture designers and suppliers have been creating hundreds and hundreds of different furniture pieces; sometimes they are stand alone, one off units, but more often than not, they will create furniture ranges that comprise either one style of one unit in different dimensions, or matching units that serve different purposes.
The latter option is the most useful for our intentions. By working with a furniture range you can utterly transform the atmosphere of your bathroom with addition of just a few cabinets or cupboards. How you choose your cabinets is entirely a matter of taste, as where finish is concerned, there are all shades of wood available, from light, fresh pine and oak, to rich, dark walnut and wenge. Then are all manner of metallic and lacquered, coloured finishes to consider as well. After finishes, we have the styling of the cabinets to consider. Again, the arrangement and number of drawers and cupboards is down to you, as is the choice of handles and counter tops, if applicable. Most modern bathroom furniture will also come with soft-close doors and a moisture-resistant coating, but be sure to check with the supplier.
Once you have your preferred styling and finish, then you can pick your units. I would usually advise on a range consisting of a fitted vanity unit, a wall-mounted mirrored cabinet and a freestanding Tallboy unit for a complete look. None of these models will occupy a great deal of space, but they will provide you with all of the storage space you require.
With the addition of this furniture to your cleaned up bathroom, you will have created that feels new, that feels stylish, and that feels comfortable and inviting. Go on, have a click around and see for yourselves!
