Cottage style homes have a fresh, comfortable feel to them. You can decorate your front door to emphasize the style of cottage decor in your home, whether it is a shabby chic cottage, beach or lakeside home, or a Cape Cod type cottage setting. Cottage homes utilize lace, white or pastel colors, floral, vintage, and rustic or country patterns to give the ambience of a place you want to enter and stay for a while. - Front doors give the first impression of your cottage home. Do not settle for boring paint colors for this type of home. Use burgundy, lime green, warm corals and even lavender paint to liven up your entryway. Many cottage homes are white on the exterior and your favorite fresh looking color for the front door simply says, "Welcome, put up your feet and sit a spell."
- Utilizing wreaths on your front door will give your cottage home a comfortable, relaxing appeal. Place a barn star in the middle of a grapevine wreath to give it a rustic country feel. Floral wreaths help to bring the outdoors inside. You can wrap rubber bands around the stems of hydrangeas or other garden flowers, such as roses, hang them upside down for several days to allow them to dry and then hot glue them onto a grapevine or other type of wreath. Alternately, you can purchase ready-made wreaths with beautiful silk or dried flowers that enhance your front door paint or make your own easily. Add a fabric bow in a coordinating shade to enhance the beautiful flowers.
- Many cottages have front doors with windowpanes or oval glass in them. You can use frosted glass spray available at hobby and craft stores to give them an old-fashioned frosted glass appearance. Window clings are available in many styles at home supply stores and are simple to install. You can find stained glass, wisteria or other floral patterns, etched glass or a lattice look in window clings. Alternately, you can hang lace or white sheer curtains over your door glass to give your cottage a French country, romantic or lakeside touch of freshness.
- Use old-fashioned or funky door knockers, hinges or doorknob plates to give your cottage home a look all its own.
