- 1). Determine which ABS controller your Toyota Highlander will need. You'll want to be sure the new controller is compatible with your make and model of Highlander. All versions of the Highlander have an ABS and use a unit that integrates the ABS controller with the hydraulic control unit.
- 2). Disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench. Drain the brake fluid and remove the air cleaner assembly, including the hose, so you can access the ABS controller.
- 3). Label the position of the six brake lines before disconnecting them from the ABS controller. Use a suitable brake line tool to prevent damage to the brake lines or their fittings.
- 4). Pull up on the lock lever for the ABS controller's electrical connector to detach the electrical connector from the ABS controller. Remove the two bolts and one nut that secure the ABS controller bracket to the vehicle with a socket wrench. Unscrew the two nuts that hold the ABS controller to its bracket.
- 5). Install the new ABS controller by reversing the removal procedure. Use a torque wrench to tighten the two mounting nuts for the ABS controller to 48 inch lbs. Torque the mounting bolts and nut for the ABS controller bracket to 14 feet lbs. Tighten the brake line fittings to 11 feet lbs. with a torque wrench and brake line tool.
