- 1). Turn off the breaker inside the main breaker panel supplying power to the light switch.
- 2). Remove the two screws holding the wall plate cover to the light switch.
- 3). Locate the two black wires connected to the right side of the switch inside the switch box . Touch one prong of a two-prong electrical tester to one black wire on the right of the switch, and touch the other prong to any metal on the switch or switch box. If the electrical power is disconnected correctly, the tester will not light. Repeat the test for the remaining black wire connected to the switch.
- 4). Remove the two screws at the top and the bottom of the switch holding it into the switch box. Pull the switch from the box and loosen the two screws on the side of the original switch. Remove the two black wires from beneath the two screws.
- 5). Untwist the wire connector holding the two white wires together inside the original switch box. Untwist the wire connector holding the two bare copper wires together inside the box.
- 6). Pull a length of 12-2 nonmetallic, NM, electrical cable from the new fixture into the original switch box. Remove the exterior sheath from the electrical cable using a dual NM wire cutter/stripper. Strip 3/4 inch of insulation off the interior black and white wires from the NM cable.
- 7). Twist a red wire connector onto the three white wires inside the original switch box to join them together. Twist another red wire connector onto the three bare copper wires inside the original switch box, joining them together. Push these two sets of wires into the back of the original switch box.
- 8). Wrap the black power supply wire around a brass screw on the right side of the Leviton 5224 switch. The power supply wire connects directly back to the breaker inside the main panel.
- 9). Connect the original black fixture wire to one brass screw on the left side of the Leviton 5224 switch. Connect the new black fixture wire to the remaining brass screw on the left side of the Leviton switch. Tighten all three screws on the Leviton switch to hold the three black wires securely to the switch.

Push the Leviton 5224 switch into the original switch box. Connect the switch to the top and the bottom of the box with screws provided with the Leviton switch. Cover the Leviton switch with a duplex single gang wall plate. - 11
Turn on the breaker inside the main breaker panel supplying power to the new Leviton 5224 switch.
