How to choose informal wedding dresses

    • 1). Choose a length. Casual doesn't necessarily mean short. An informal wedding dress often reaches anywhere from the top of the knees to below the ankles. A shorter skirt allows you to show off your legs. A dress that falls to mid-calf helps add height, yet still looks casual.

    • 2). Compare fabrics. Wedding dresses are available in many differing fabrics. Certain fabrics, such as damask, lace and velvet, are associated with more formal occasions. If you're aiming for a lighter look, consider fabrics with a less heavy feel such as cotton, linen and jersey.

    • 3). Evaluate color choices. An informal wedding dress can be any color you want. If this is not your first wedding, consider shades that are meaningful to you or flattering to your features. If you have dark blue eyes, for example, choose a dress that will bring attention to them. If you still like white, consider a more muted shade. Dresses in ivory, seashell, beige, tan and cream make it clear that you are still the bride.

    • 4). Investigate available details. Some dresses are sleek with no additional ornamentation. Other dresses may have intricate patterns sewn on as well as added beads, sequins, rhinestones or seed pearls. An informal dress can still have details that express your personality. Consider adding intricate facets to one part of the dress, such as the shoulders or the waistline, while leaving the rest of the dress plain.

    • 5). Research accessories. Shoes, jewelry, hair ornaments and the stockings you choose will all add to the effect you're trying to create. If you're aiming for simplicity, a pair of understated low-heeled peep-toes can be coupled with sheer pantyhose and a thin veil made of netting.

    • 6). Work with your body type. If you are tall and thin, create a casual look with a figure flattering sheath or classic A-line dress. If you are shorter or more voluptuous, emphasize informality with the use of a simple princess silhouette.
