- 1). Grow weeping cherry in a full-sun location that is protected from wind. Prune back or remove nearby trees that may shade it out. Keep lawn grass well away from the root zone of the tree so there is neither competition for soil resources nor impacts from products applied to the lawn.
- 2). Provide an easy draining soil that is slightly acidic with a clay, loam or sandy composition.
- 3). Water regularly and deeply year-round to maintain evenly moist to very moist soil at all times. When grown in sandy soil, be particularly careful to keep the tree root zone very moist to wet.
- 4). Mulch around the base of the tree once or twice each year with 2 to 4 inches of organic material such as shredded bark. Mulch insulates the root zone from rapid temperature fluctuations, keeps competitive weeds down, preserves soil moisture and prevents soil from splashing up onto the long dangling branches. Start mulch roughly 6 inches out from the trunk and extend the blanket at least 1 to 2 feet beyond the widest drip line of the canopy.
- 5). Prune only to remove damaged or dead branch material or to trim the tips of branches that grow long enough to scrape the surface of the soil, as this creates an easy transfer point for insects and disease.
