- Hinoki cypress is suitable for temperate climates and may be cultivated in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 4 through 8. Dwarf cultivars are popular, and the tree is sometimes cultivated as an indoor bonsai plant.
- The hinoki cypress tree has a conical habit, with bright green leaves and reddish brown bark that is susceptible to peeling. The tree may grow to heights of 80 to 115 feet. Hinoki cypress is known for being somewhat slow-growing.
- Hinoki cypress will grow best in a moist, well-draining soil that is neutral to slightly acidic. The tree prefers full sunlight. Common garden diseases and pests include root rot, twig and needle blight, and spruce mites.
- The timber of large trees is used for construction, as well as for furniture and fine interiors. Smaller varieties may be grown in the home garden as specimen trees or privacy screens.
