The real John Locke studied medicine, and in 1666 he met up with the 1st Earl of Shaftesbury, who was suffering from a serious liver infection. He persuaded Locke to become his personal physician, and Locke moved into Shaftesbury’s home. When the infection became worse, Locke performed a risky but successful surgery to remove the cyst from Shaftesbury’s liver, and Shaftesbury proclaimed that John Locke had saved his life.
The Earl’s name was Anthony Ashley Cooper.
On the show, Anthony Cooper is the name of Locke's father, who stole his kidney.
