It is a cruel world out there. The saying "dress to impress" is very true; whether you like it or not, being fashionable is about more than just making a statement. In the corporate world, the way you look matters. It is human nature to make assumptions; the way you dress says a lot about your personality and demeanor, and this is something employers are keen to pick up on. The problem is that most people get lazy and/or comfortable about their wardrobes. We all know looking the part is ideal for making a great first impression when it comes to the job interview, but what about afterwards? Although most businesses have strict dress codes, a majority of employees don't always abide by them.
This does not mean you need to spend thousands of dollars on fancy designer labels. Appearance can have a big effect on self-esteem, so do yourself the favor of leaving the house every day in style. Your probably thinking this is easier said than done. After all, most of us don't have hours to spend each morning getting ready. Thus, making the most of the time you do have is very important.
How to be in style every day (and not be late to work)
1. Use two clocks; this may seem crazy, but it's actually a great way to stay productive and avoid being late for work. Install a mountable clock in your closet or on the wall, and set it to be 10-15 minutes ahead of the actual time. Your mind will naturally think you're running behind, which will in effect keep you from getting distracted (i.e. wanting to lay down for a few extra minutes). By the time you walk out the door, you will have time to spare.
2. Eat breakfast before you shower and get dressed; crumbs and spills are a fashion nightmare. Getting ready is a precise art, and this is the fundamental first step. Whatever you do, don't skip eating altogether either. You will only end up feeling sluggish and drowsy.
3. Get enough sleep; no matter how expensive or stylish the outfit your wearing is, it will do nothing to hide the bags under your eyes. 8 hours is still the sweet spot!
4. Installing features like tie and shoe racks can make short work of getting ready, especially since these are the things people tend to lose most often. Remember, poor fashion decisions (i.e. mismatching) happen when you are not prepared.
