Air-cleaning plants that are easy to care for are the best plants to have indoors. Air-cleaning plants help remove pollutants from the rooms in which they're placed. Although there were many indoor houseplants tested by NASA that showed the ability to filter pollutants such as benzene, trichloroethylene and formaldehyde in an enclosed room, only a few plants are easy to care for and grow. - Spider plants are the best plants to grow indoors. The spider plant can grow in locations with indirect sunlight, shade or partial sunlight. The spider plants don't need to be transplanted. When the plant becomes root-bound, the plant produces long stems capped with white flowers that turn into baby spider plants, which can be left on the plant or placed in another pot to start a new plant. Spider plants help clean the air of formaldehyde.
- Snake plants are easy-care indoor plants that have sword-like foliage that grows upright. The variegated or dark-green foliage is stiff and needs very little care. Snake plants grow the best in full sunlight and will also grow very well in low-light conditions, but the foliage may not be as pronounced. The snake plant helps clean the air of formaldehyde.
- The heart-shaped leaves of the philodendron make it a pretty choice for any room. The plant is ideal for a hanging basket or as a table plant with a bark pole in the center. The plant tolerates limited light and grows the best in bright light without direct sunlight. Philodendrons help clean the air of formaldehyde.
- In some states, the English ivy is considered an invasive exotic plant. However, when grown indoors as a houseplant, the English ivy helps clean the air of benzene. The plant does well in a hanging basket, on a table or in a terrarium. English ivy plants do well in indirect sunlight, but do need to be cut down from time to time to prevent the plant from becoming unmanageable.
