- 1). Examine your overall goal. Do you hope to lose a large amount of weight, obtain a degree or better balance your life between work and housework? Set miniature goals to help you commit to a routine that will set you on the right path. Small goals be eating better during a given month, researching degree programs in a chosen field, or writing out your daily schedule for the coming week. Continue to add steps to this plan to achieve your overall goal.
- 2). Set deadlines for achieving certain steps, and write down scheduled parts of your routine. This will serve as a visual reminder, which can act as encouragement. If you commit yourself to go to the gym immediately when you wake up, for instance, follow through. Schedule your routine into your life. Tell others about your goals and rules to create a support system that you can turn to when you start to feel discouraged.
- 3). Participate in the routine frequently. Something that occurs multiple times a week, or every day, stands better odds of becoming a staple of your life than something that occurs a few times a week or month.
- 4). Focus on your achievements. Disappointment can destroy chances of committing to a routine. You may not lose weight as quickly as you hope or finish a degree program as in the time frame you envisioned. Reexamine your goals and routine frequently, readjusting it to improve your chances of success. Create new, realistic deadlines based on where you are presently in achieving your goals.
- 5). Reward yourself for your efforts. For every week or month you stick to a routine, you may choose to reward yourself with new clothing, music for an MP3 player, a massage, or something else that will provide you with the motivation to see your goals through to completion.
