- 1). Cut off the male flowers except for a few. Fertilize with a dilution of higher-phosphorus fertilizer according to package directions. Water it in until the first 3 to 4 inches of soil are very wet to the touch.
- 2). Cover the butternut squash plant with row cover fabric to increase the shade and cool the plants. Use the soil staples to secure the fabric if necessary. Mist the plants at midday to cool the apical stems where shoots and flowers form.
- 3). Prune out overhead tree limbs that may be over-shading the butternut squash plant. Too much shade will block production of flowers in general and female flowers specifically. Use the ladder if necessary and open an area for light to come to the plant.
- 4). Water the butternut squash at least a couple of times a week when the season is hot. Soak the ground in the evening or morning.
