This series on Astrology was written by Amy Herring for Kiddiegram.com. From the bio of Amy Herring: Carl Jung said, “I’d rather be whole than good.” Amy uses astrology to help people become whole. She has been studying, teaching, and reading for clients as a counseling astrologer for over a decade and is deeply in love with her 3 year old daughter. What is Astrology?
Astrology tracks the location of various heavenly bodies at any given moment in time, to gain insight into the nature, potential, and meaning of an event or person born in that moment. While there are varying opinions, the predominant belief is that the location of the planets and other bodies in the sky is a reflection of what is happening on earth, not a cause. The ancient and common phrase “As above, so below” conveys what’s at the heart of astrology: by understanding what happens on the larger scale, such as universally, we can understand what is happening on each smaller level contained within, such as nations, families, or inside our own hearts.
A Symbolic Language:
Astrology is a language of symbols. A symbol is a word or picture or object that represents something else. For instance, in most areas of the world, a red octagon would indicate “stop.” We would not even need to see the word to associate the meaning of the shape rather quickly. Some symbols convey a richer meaning than just one word or action.
If we see a cartoon drawing of a simple heart, we may think of the heart organ, or the vastly complex subject of love in all its forms, or perhaps even our best friend or our spouse and all they mean to us. Astrology is one of several ways that we try to categorize and understand ourselves and the world around us. Psychology, religion, biology -– they are all different approaches to feed the same hunger: what makes us tick.
