How to Translate German Web Pages

    • 1). Select a German web page for translation. These can be found by looking for the suffix ".de" at the end of the Internet address. ".de" stands for "Deutschland," the German name for Germany. For example, www.stern.de is the website of "Der Stern," a major German newspaper.

    • 2). Go to Google's main search page by typing in the web address www.google.com. Type the words "Der Stern" in the text box and press enter. A new web page will appear that features various web pages that contain the words, "Der Stern." The German newspaper's site should appear at the very top of the page. Identify the "Der Stern" site by looking for the address www.stern.de. Though the rest of the descriptive information is in German, the actual web site address will appear at the bottom of the main block of text.

    • 3). Find the title of the website. It is underlined, and appears at the very beginning of the descriptive text. Immediately to the right of the title is a pair of brackets that contains the words, "Translate this page." Click on the area between the brackets. Google will translate the German web pages into English. Click on any individual article or feature to continue with the German-to-English translation.

    • 4). Access "Der Stern" directly to use an alternate method of translating German websites. Type in the address www.stern.de. The web page will appear in German. Click on an article. Use the mouse to highlight the first paragraph of the article. Right click on the mouse, and select the word, "Copy."

    • 5). Find an online translation site by typing "German-English translation" into the search box of Google, Yahoo! or any other Internet search engine. You may also type in any similar search term, such as German translator or German-English dictionary. Select one of the free translation sites, such as Babylon, FreeTranslation.com, or Babel Fish. The site will bring up an empty text box, or pair of text boxes. Make sure one of these boxes is identified as a place to enter German text. On some sites, it may be necessary to select "German-to-English Translation" (or an equivalent phrase) from a drop-down box.

    • 6). Click on the appropriate box. Right click on the mouse, and select the word paste. The German text will appear in the box. Click the button labeled, "Translate" (or an equivalent term). The website will translate the German text into English. The translated text will appear in a new box.
