China is the most populous nation in the world with just over 1.3 billion people distributed over an area slightly larger than the United States. It is also one of the oldest civilizations in the world and was a very advanced society, though it did not experience the industrial revolution on the scale that other nations did and civil wars eventually led to revolution. Many mission opportunities have opened up in China, particularly for those willing to teach classes in English. - The educational system in China encourages students to learn English. The Volunteer in China Mission connects volunteers with students in the Shandong Province to teach conversational English on the primary and secondary level. Schools are well-equipped and well-attended. Volunteer work consists in helping students with practice comprehension and pronunciation.
- The Ming Educational Consultancy asks for a six to 12 month commitment for teachers of English as a second language. This group is non-denominational and part of their goal is to bridge cultural differences between east and west. The program is located in a small city about two hours away from Beijing.
- Global Infusion's China Outreach focuses on several different areas of service. One of these is caring for orphans who have special physical needs in the Foster Home. Opportunities for teaching conversational English are also offered through Global Infusion. Caring for the elderly by regular visitation is a third way to offer a helping hand to the Chinese people. Ministries to the poor seek to help restore dignity and hope to the poorest families in the region. Finally, helping with medical care is offered and duties will depend on the volunteer's level of education and experience.
- Teen Missions International coordinates short-term mission trips for youth all over the world. Since its founding in 1970, over 40,000 teens have assisted at over 200 established mission in over 110 different countries. Youth spend a few weeks helping with whatever project the mission has planned and can include community outreach, building projects, and teaching.
- Operation Mobilization coordinates mission trips to China for service in several different fields. Community health development provides health awareness and training for underprivileged students so they can promote healthy lifestyles in their own communities. In the field of education, teachers are especially needed on the university level for English, sports coaching, and agriculture. Health care missionaries attempt to provide prevention services to counteract the increase in hepatitis B cases as well as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and dysentery.
