- 1). Turn on a garden hose so only a small trickle of water comes out. Place the hose at the base of an existing shell ginger plant and allow the hose to run for at least one to two hours to completely saturate the soil.
- 2). Turn off the hose and insert a shovel all the way into the ground approximately 1 foot from the base of the shell ginger plant. Lean back on the shovel to loosen the soil. Remove the shovel and insert it on the other side of the plant to loosen the soil. Continue until the soil is loose all the way around the shell ginger.
- 3). Lift the loosened soil up out of the ground and use a garden hose to rinse the excess soil off of the roots of the ginger, which are called rhizomes. The rhizomes looks like a thick horizontal root that has multiple vertical stems growing from it.
- 4). Cut the horizontal rhizome into sections using sharp pruning shears. Each section should have at least two vertical stalks on it.
- 5). Choose a planting location that has full to partial sunlight and moist soil. Dig a hole deep enough to allow the rhizome root to sit 1 inch below the soil. Place the ginger plant into the hole with the vertical stems pointing upward and fill in the hole with soil.
- 6). Water the soil around the newly planted shell ginger plants at least every other day and do not allow the soil to dry out.
