- 1). Turn off the main water supply to the structure.
- 2). Remove the faucet handle's set screw. The screw is located on the bottom side of the handle, and can be removed with either a screwdriver or an Allen wrench, depending on the design.
- 3). Remove the faucet's handle by pulling the handle away from the faucet assembly.
- 4). Remove the caulking that surrounds the escutcheon plate by cutting through the caulking with a plastic putty knife. The escutcheon plate is the chrome-, black- or gold-finish metal piece that sits behind the faucet's handle and rests against the wall.
- 5). Pull the escutcheon plate away from the wall to reveal the shower's faucet.
- 6). Use a deep socket attached to a socket wrench to remove the shower's faucet. Place the socket into the shower's wall, then twist the socket until the socket locks onto the faucet's retaining nut. Turn the faucet in a clockwise direction until the faucet is loose, then pull the faucet out of the wall.
- 7). Remove the single brass stem screw from the bottom of the faucet with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Once the screw has been removed, the rubber washer the screw held to the faucet can be removed.
- 8). Unscrew the threaded spindle from the brass retaining nut, then pull the threaded spindle out of the retaining nut. The threaded spindle runs through the center of the retaining nut.
- 9). Slide the plastic washer off the end of the threaded spindle to complete the disassembly process.
