- Most household cleaners are safe for women to use throughout their pregnancy and pose no risk of harm to the fetus, according to the American Pregnancy Association and The March of Dimes.
- Products that contain bleach or ammonia may trigger nausea in some pregnant women and should be avoided during the first trimester. Commerical products that are labeled toxic, such as oven cleaners, should not be used by pregnant women at any time.
- Pregnant women should use cleaning products in well ventilated areas and always wear rubber gloves to protect the skin. Read labels carefully to avoid accidental contact with toxic substances.
- Although chlorine bleach and ammonia are safe to use separately while pregnant, it is critical to never mix the two chemicals together. Doing so can result in dangerous fumes.
- Women who are uncomfortable with commercial cleaning products can safely clean with natural products. Baking soda is effective for cleaning sinks, bathtubs and ovens, while a solution of vinegar and water can be used to clean most other surfaces.
