Pregnancy Signs and Symptoms: Week 13 of Pregnancy

Week 13 of Pregnancy – Pregnancy Signs and Symptoms

Welcome to your Guide to Pregnancy – Week 13.

This is the final week of your first trimester and hopefully all those icky first trimester ailments, like morning sickness.

Your baby is growing and growing.  This week he or she is about the size of an apple weighing in at ¾ ounce and around 2.5 inches!  While her head is still about half the size of her entire length her body is catching up and straightening out – at birth the head will only be a ¼ of the body size!

This week your baby's bones are hardening but still flexible to allow for growth.  This growth allows your baby to move around – yes, she is moving in there! You may not feel her somersaults and karate kicks, but she is moving.  With the help of an ultrasound, you would be surprised to see your baby's movement!

The placenta is running in full-force now – which may be the reason why many of your early pregnancy symptoms are starting to fade.  The placenta takes over many of the functions your body was working so hard at doing to provide for your baby.  The placenta filters out nutrients for your baby while taking away wastes from the baby – however, it cannot filter out everything.  Make sure to talk with your doctor about any medications you may be taking and continue to steer clear from drugs, alcohol and tobacco.

Still taking those prenatal vitamins?  I hope so! Your baby is benefiting from them and will throughout the pregnancy.  If you have a horse-sized pill, upsets your tummy or causes constipation or diarrhea, talk with your doctor and try several until you find one that works for you.

Some of the symptoms you may be experiencing are:
  • Frequent urination – day and night
  • Heartburn
  • Aversions to smells and food…or you may be craving foods that you never thought twice about
  • White vaginal discharge
  • Bloating and flatulence.  Many women mistake this for "showing" but unfortunately it is more likely that you are bloated
  • Breast changes – size, tenderness, tingling, veins, darkening of the areolas
  • Excess saliva
  • Nausea – with or without vomiting
  • Fatigue and/or lack of motivation
  • PMS-like symptoms such as weepiness, mood swings and irritability
  • Disbelief that there is actually a baby growing in your body or a new found calmness surrounding your pregnancy

Another wonderful and celebratory milestone – your chances of miscarriage are slimming down each week.  At this point, chances of carrying full-term are very good.  Keep taking good care of yourself by eating a healthy diet, exercising, taking your prenatal vitamins and keep stress to a minimum.

You may not need maternity pants now, but that bump is probably starting to move up above your pelvic bone and become noticeable – if only to you and those close to you.  Your breasts maybe another story – swollen, tingling and covered with blue veins – make sure you have a good fitting bra that is comfortable.  Along with your belly, your breasts are going to get bigger too!
