How to Choose the Right Adhesive For Your Project

The reason that not all types of adhesives will work for all projects is because some glue will dry and be hard and brittle, while other types of adhesives will bond but remain flexible, even when dry.
For instance, if you were to repair a cabinet joint with glue, you would not want to use the type of adhesive that is flexible when dry; but if you were to glue two different types of materials together you may want a more flexible glue due to the fact that these materials will expand and contract differently.
When using a stiff drying glue, it would easily break away from the material.
If the object you are gluing will be subject to any types of chemicals, you will want an adhesive that is resistant to chemicals.
An example would be if you were gluing a section of a kitchen counter top; you will likely be using household cleaners to clean the area so you will not want an adhesive that will breakdown when exposed to these chemicals.
The environment that you will be using the adhesive in will also be an important consideration.
If you will be gluing something that will remain outdoors, or in an area of high humidity, you will definitely want to use waterproof glue with a water repellent that can withstand the moisture.
There are many different types of adhesives available, but not all of them can be used for all projects.
  • Hot glue is a common type of glue that must be used with a hot glue gun.
This is a moderate strength adhesive that dries quickly.
This type of glue is often used in craft projects.
  • Epoxy glue is a type of adhesive that must be mixed before use.
This is strong bonding glue that is used on non-porous material, with the exception of plastic.
This type of glue will dissolve plastic.
  • Contact cement is often used to bond surfaces where clamping is not feasible.
This is strong glue that is permanent once applied.
  • White glue is a moderate strength adhesive.
This glue is not waterproof and is used to glue wood, cloth and paper materials.
  • Animal glue is the first glue that people used.
This type of glue can be applied in liquid form when cold or hot.
This is a very strong type of glue that is used in projects such as building furniture.
The drawback of using this type of glue is that it does tend to become brittle, plus there is no resistance to moisture.
There are many types of adhesives and finding the right glue for your project can make all the difference in if that glue will hold long term.
Many adhesives are toxic and some are also flammable, so when using glue make sure that you read the directions carefully to avoid injury.
