Asphalt milling is the process of grinding off the asphalt to be recycled and used for redoing the asphalt. This process is often used in road construction and driveway reconstruction. The asphalt milling tools that are used are heavy pieces of equipment that tear the asphalt from the surface. These tools save asphalt companies and those who use these services thousands of dollars because the material is reused, rather than purchased anew. - An asphalt milling machine is used for roads that are straight. It removes the top surface of asphalt off of a road at a rate of 75 feet per minute. The machine has grinders in the center that sit down on the pavement and grind the surface. The front of the milling machine distributes the ground up asphalt into the back of a dump truck with a conveyor belt system where it can be taken to the asphalt plant and reused later. The milling machine drives behind the dump truck and the dump truck driver stays on pace with the milling machine.
- A grinding attachment for skid loaders is used to grind the surface of the pavement along curvy roads and areas where the roads are not wide enough for the large milling machines to allow one-way traffic. The skid loader miller is controlled by the foot pedals that operate the hydraulics of the machine. The depth can be set by raising and lowering the arms of the skid loader. Once the asphalt is ground up, the asphalt is picked up with the skid loader bucket attachment.
- A back hoe miller is a milling attachment that is installed where the bucket attaches to the hoe arm. The hydraulic hoses power the grinding cutters on the end of the attachment. The back hoe milling attachment can be used like the skid loader miller, but typically is used to mill turning areas or extreme curved areas where other milling equipment would damage the curbs.
