I have noticed that a lot of realtors don't reach their new buyer and seller client potential. And they aren't reaching their potential simply because they aren't organizing their time effectively.
Systems Thinking Versus a Pop Tart Realtor
It can be really easy to run around and work many more hours than you need to reach your real estate goals. This happens when you become a realtor that works in response activities more than system activities. And response activity are like answer the phone, running to show a home if someone calls on it. My dad use to call response based real estate activities playing pop tart realtor. It seems like an important activity but it makes it impossible to plan your day and most response activities don't lead directly to a sale of a home.
So what qualifies something as a system activity? A system activity is one that is setting up a system and to bring in more buyer or seller leads. Or it's a system to fulfill your real estate services.
Most of us in the real estate industry are responsive because you never know when, or where the next deal is going to come from. So its easy to feel like you have to play the responsive game if you want to make a living. And that's kind of true. Most realtors I have met that have control over their time took a six month to year goal of transferring from a response based real estate business to a systems based one.
The three other realtors that I know that have full control over their time did that in under an hour a day of planning. Their system of planning was as simple as listing out 20 new ways a day that they could do to get new buyers or sellers.
Most of the ideas you get from this daily exercise wont be that great. But every once and a while you will find a good one. And when you do you can add one new way of getting buyers and sellers to your business. The key to making this working your own ideas.
If you practice this daily, you will find that sooner or later you will have more leads than you have time for. When that day comes you'll have complete control of your time. And you can stop responding to every opportunity you have to get business because you won't need it.
