- 1). Choose the area you wish to plant your Tennessee wild flowers. Most wild flowers require sunny locations, unless you are specifically buying shade wild flowers.
- 2). Clear the area of grass, larger rocks, shrubs or any other vegetation you feel will be in the way. Dig out the larger vegetation with a shovel and pull what you can by hand. This will work fine for smaller areas.
- 3). Turn the soil with the shovel so that fresh soil is now on top. After you have turned the soil, use the metal rake to loosen and smooth the dirt.
- 4). Till the soil with a rototiller for larger areas by following the manufacturer instructions that came with the rototiller. This will work well to remove the grass when there is a lot of land to be planted with the Tennessee wild flowers.
- 5). Sprinkle the fertilizer according to the directions if using it for your flowers. Make sure this is raked or tilled into the soil well before planting your wild flowers. This step is not normally a requirement to plant wild flowers in Tennessee.
- 6). Determine how much seed you will be using according to the instructions that came with the wild flower seed mix.
- 7). Pour half of the required seed into the coffee can along with 10 times that amount of sand. Mix gently.
- 8). Sprinkle the area with the sand and seed mixture. The sand will allow you to see where the seeds have landed, as well as know where you have already dropped seeds.
- 9). Pour the second half of the wild flower seeds into the coffee can and again pour 10 times as much sand in with the seeds. Mix gently.
- 10
Repeat the process of sprinkling the area with the sand and seed mixture. Make sure at this point that no areas are left bare. - 11
Walk over the entire area to push the seeds into the soil. Be sure to cover the area with your footprints. It is not necessary to rake the seeds in or cover them. Stepping on them works just fine. A large area should be compacted with a lawn roller if one is available. - 12
Water as needed to keep the soil moist until seedlings appear.
