- Give each party guest a red cap or visor to decorate like Elmo. Use markers, sticky craft foam, glue, fabric pens and googly eyes. Help smaller children by cutting two large oval circles and two black circles from craft foam for the eyes. Use an oval orange piece of craft foam for the nose. The children can draw eyebrows and eyelashes on Elmo if they prefer. The children can take the hats home as a party favor and a memento of the party.
- Place a plush Elmo toy on a tall fence in the back corner of the yard. Make an obstacle course leading to the plush Elmo. Tell the children to go around trees, through hula hoops, under or over ropes and jump over small rocks. Have all the party guests hold on to a large rope and run the course together to try to save Elmo. Once they reach him, they must work together and use the rope to rescue Elmo from the tall fence.
- Print several colored Elmo pictures. Cut each picture into puzzle pieces and place one puzzle in a plastic zipper bag. Do this to all the puzzles and create the puzzle's difficulty depending on the child's age. For younger children only cut about six puzzles pieces and for older children cut 10 to 20 pieces. To make the puzzles more durable, laminate all the pieces before the children play with them. Give each child an Elmo puzzle to put together. The children can switch puzzles if they get bored putting the same one together.
- Have the children sit around a table and give each child a small tub of red play dough. This activity is messy, so place a large tablecloth over the table if you do not want it to get dirty. Tell the children they are going to use the play dough to design Elmo. Help the children shape Elmo's body. Then give them white, black and orange pieces of play dough to create Elmo's face. Have a contest to see who can create the best play dough Elmo and award a special prize to that child.
