- 1). Determine where you want to mount the tachometer inside your vehicle. Most tachometers come with a mounting device to attach to the steering column.
- 2). Run the wiring from the tachometer into the engine compartment.
- 3). On the tachometer will be a black ground wire, a red wire and a green wire. Ground the black ground wire to the battery.
- 4). Locate your car's ignition coil. The ignition coil will be located in different places on different cars; consult your owner's manual.
- 5). Hook the red wire to the positive side of the ignition coil.
- 6). Hook the green wire to the negative side of the ignition coil.
- 7). If your tachometer has a fourth wire, it is for a light and can be hooked into your car's lighting system by splicing it into the wires that go into the dash. This is where you would use the wire strippers and electrical tape.
