- The philosophy of middle-level education holds that grades 6-8 are a pivotal and sensitive time in the development of an adolescent, and that approaches that will work with students in elementary school or high school may not work in middle school. Accordingly, many universities offer scholarships for students majoring in middle-level education in order to ensure that American middle schools will be staffed by capable and understanding educators.
