The citrus splash rose bush delights with its fruity, citrus-like smell in the garden throughout the summer and early fall months. This beautiful rose is hardy and tends to be disease and pest free, which makes it a favorite for flower gardens, as well as hedges and borders. It requires little maintenance and can be easily propagated by sticking a cutting into a glass of water until it forms new roots. - Plant your citrus splash rose bush in an area where it will receive full sunlight throughout most of the day. You can grow this type of rose in other sunlight conditions, but you may not have as many clusters of blooms as you would in ideal sunny locations. The dark, green glossy foliage will make it an attractive bush in any location. It grows best in USDA Hardiness Zones 6 through 9.
- Pull off the spent blossoms in order to increase the orange-, yellow- and pink-colored blooms throughout the growing season, according to The Carefree Gardener website. The citrus splash rose's bud is in an ovoid pointed shape and makes a lovely flower to dry while in this stage. The blooms average around 3-1/2 inches in diameter, according to the Help Me Find website. They grow in an upright position and their height does not usually exceed 4 feet.
- Remove dead or diseased canes during the early spring months. Cut back the healthy limbs to about 1/3 their length. In colder Northern climates, it may require even a shorter length. Make sure to remove any limbs that cross over each other, it may destroy some of its own limbs during strong winds or inclement weather.
- This hardy rose can be susceptible to black root. Treat this disease by raking away all the dead leaves from underneath the plant and removing any limbs with black spots evident on top portion of the leaves. Use a fungicide that specifies it is for this type of problem and follow the directions on the container.
- Water your citrus splash rose bush thoroughly at least once a week with a soaker hose left on for about an hour. During particularly hot or dry months, you may need to water it more often. Check the soil periodically by pushing your finger into the earth at its base. If it is dry, you need to water the rose bush.
- Citrus splash roses like a soil that is slightly acidic. You can place pine mulch on top of the soil in a 3-foot diameter around the base to create more acidity if your soil does not have a pH level of 5.6 to 6.5.
- Use a rose fertilizer once a month on your citrus splash roses. Follow the instructions on the label for the best results. You may need to reduce the strength by half during the hottest months of July and August in order to avoid burning the roots.
