- Armenian tomatoes can grow very large under the right conditions. Fully grown and ripe tomatoes may exceed over 6 inches in width and about 5 inches in height. The circumference of the tomato can reach over 12 inches. However, in poorer conditions, such as with a shortage of nutrients in the soil, or with the wrong lighting conditions, the tomatoes will grow much smaller.
- Armenian heirloom tomatoes are a crossbreed of several varieties of heirloom tomatoes. They are a combination of Armenian pink tomatoes and Armenian yellow tomatoes. The Armenian heirloom tomato is a marbled crossbreed that has the characteristics of both tomato varieties. The reason this tomato is considered an heirloom is because it has been passed down in Armenia for over 50 years. The Armenian heirloom tomato is considered a beefsteak tomato.
- Care for the Armenian heirloom tomato plant is the same as for any other tomato plant. Seeds are planted in seed boxes, filled with compost or some other growing medium. The compost is kept constantly moist until the tomatoes sprout. The best temperature for germination to occur is 21 to 24 degrees Celsius. On the 10th day of sprouting the seedlings should be thinned to 24 inches apart. The seeds can be moved outdoors six to 10 weeks after planting. Once the plants are outdoors, they should be watered every three to four days, when the soil starts to dry out. Soil should be kept well-drained, to prevent root and fruit rot. When the plants reach about 24 inches tall, a stake or some other stabilizer should be used to hold the plant up.
- The best regions to grow Armenian heirloom tomatoes include hardiness zones 3 to 9. Tomatoes can actually grow almost all over the United States, but the growing season will be different depending on the area. Tomatoes need full sun, plenty of water and well-drained soil. Any location that provides these conditions will raise healthy tomato plants.
- If seeds are started six weeks before the last frost of the year, then they will be ready to plant outdoors about two weeks after the last frost. Typically this is sometime between March and April. The Armenian tomato plant will continue to grow until early or late fall, depending on the growing region. Most tomato plants will produce several batches of tomatoes during this period.
