- 1). Cut the power to the circuit where you will be working.
- 2). Make the cuts in the wall where you will be installing the switch. Use the switch box as a template for the wall cut. Cut a small hole where the ceiling meets the wall above the switch to make threading the electric cable easier.
- 3). Remove the fan from its mounting and disconnect the wires.
- 4). Run the wiring for the switch. At the small hole, thread fish tape across the ceiling to the fan's junction box. Attach electrical cable to the fish tape and pull it back toward the small hole. Drop the wire down to the switch's hole. Leave about 8 inches of wire at each end.
- 5). Attach the switch box to the wall. Switch boxes do not have to be attached to wall studs. Pull the wires through the box.
- 6). Wrap a piece of black electrical tape around both ends of the white wire running from the fan to the switch. This shows that the wire, normally a neutral wire, is carrying electrical current.
- 7). Make the electrical connections at the switch. Attach the marked white wire and the black wire to the brass screws on the switch.
- 8). Join the switch to the power supply by connecting the switch's black wire to the supply black wire.
- 9). Reconnect the fan to the circuit. At the fan, attach the marked white wire to the fan's black wire and the unmarked white wire to the fan's white wire. If the fan has a light attached, connect the light's power wire to the marked white wire and the black fan wire.

Reattach the fan to the bracket and patch the drywall where you made the wall-ceiling cut.
