How To Hire a Personal Trainer

How To Hire a Personal Trainer

1. What should a client think about before hiring a personal trainer?

Determine your goals. For example, do you want to lose weight, build muscle, increase strength and endurance, train for a specific event, or just have overall good health and wellness. Next, decide on the ideal location that is convenient to either your home, work, or both. Also, decide what your scheduling needs are and make those very clear.  Many clients fail due to overoptimistic timing and become frustrated when they are unable to make the appointment. Lastly, set your budget.  If you cannot afford more than 3 sessions, don't put yourself in a situation to feel stressed or overwhelmed.  A good trainer will be amenable to working with you on payment and price.

2. How would you suggest someone find a trainer who is suited to her personality and goals?

Begin by asking friends and family members for a personal trainer referral. Search the internet to determine a convenient location based on your zip code or neighborhood. Once you find a location, contact the location and speak directly with a trainer. At this time you should ask specifics about credentials, experience, scheduling, pricing and other variables such as parking and changing area. This will give you a snapshot of the business, the trainers personality and a sense of rapport.

3. What should a new client expect from her first meeting with a personal trainer?

A trainer will discuss their goals, expectations, and what got them to where they are today. They will also review the appropriate assessments that will be conducted and what to expect during the first session of personal training. Pricing will be discussed and scheduling of at least 3 appointments.

4. How should new clients manage their expectations? What's a reasonable timeline to expect to see results?

Clients expectations must feel realistic and attainable. An appropriate timeline will vary from one client to another.  The investment a client commits to diet and exercise will determine their success and fall short of or exceed their expectations.  There are a few means of measuring results; some choose to weigh themselves, others feel that their waistline is a success indicator.  Also, there are individual that are hoping to gain more balance or confidence with functional activities such as getting out of a car, or climbing stairs without gasping for air, or keeping up with their dog during a walk.  There are also individuals who are interested in increasing their finish time for a 10k or marathon. Every client is unique in there goals and expectations.  All of these topics will be addressed as part of the ongoing goal setting process.

5. What sort of time commitment should a new client expect to make to see change and stay motivated? What sort of activities should they expect to do outside of personal training sessions?

A client should buy a package of at least 6 weeks of sessions to make a commitment. The activities outside  of training should always include a minimum of 30-40 minutes of cardio and core exercises

6. What's the most common roadblock to achieving success with personal training?

Staying motivated.  Often times if a client misses too many sessions in a row, they will lose "motivation momentum" and find it difficult to stay focused. Also, scheduling can be a roadblock if a client travels for business and cannot be consistent with their sessions.

7. What are characteristics that are indispensable to achieving success with personal training?

The ability to connect will all types of people and their goals. Honesty is also a very important component to achieving success. If there is not an open line of communication, it could be difficult to have successful accountability.
