Historically a honeymoon haven, the Pocono Mountains in northeast Pennsylvania have evolved to become a year-round vacation destination. The 2,400 square-mile area of hilly woodland, winding rivers, waterfalls and small towns still maintains the romanticism of its past, but visitors are discovering varied adventures and activities that cater to broadening tastes. Lodging options range from secluded campgrounds to quaint B&Bs and mega-resorts. And while modernity has changed the face of the region, the natural beauty remains timeless. - Located in the mountain biking haven of Jim Thorpe, Jim Thorpe River Adventures provides rough-and-tumble rides in the water of the Lehigh River Gorge. Choose from the Upper or Lower Gorge trips. Each section is approximately a four-hour run through Class II and Class III rapids. Or, opt for a tamer trip that peaks with Class II rapids. Trips are offered daily from late-March through October each year. The Lehigh River Dam releases extra flow into the gorge on scheduled weekends throughout the summer to give the river a little extra kick. Minimum age is eight. Kayaks are also available for solo paddlers. Camp at the nearby Lehigh Gorge State Park and relive your trip at the evening campfire.
