- 1). Print out a sailor suit collar pattern from websites such as Ellie Inspired or Deviant Art from your printer. The pattern fits onto standard printer paper.
- 2). Cut out the pattern using a pair of scissors. The patterns looks like a baby's bib, with two thin sides that are the front lapels and a wide section for the back.

Fold the 1/2 yard of cotton fabric in half. Trace the pattern onto the fabric using a fabric pencil. Sailor collars are often white or navy blue, but your collar can be any color you wish. Cut out the tracing with your fabric shears through both layers of fabric so you have two pieces of the collar. - 4). Turn one collar piece so the fabric is right side up. Trim your 1/2-inch red grosgrain ribbon so it fits as a border 1 1/2 inches from the edge, all around except the neckline. Secure it with a light application of fabric glue. Sew the ribbon down with your sewing machine with a straight stitch.
- 5). Place the right side of the other collar piece on top of the collar with the ribbon. Each right side of the fabric is facing each other. Pin them together with straight pins. Straight stitch around the entire collar except the neckline using your sewing machine. Turn the collar inside out so it is now right side out.
- 6). Iron your collar so it is completely smooth on an ironing board. Pin the collar's neckline onto your shirt if you want it attached and sew it together. Otherwise, pin the collar and sew it alone. This creates a detachable sailor collar.
