- 1). Make a list of all of the birthday person's hobbies and interests. No interest is too obscure for this list. You may come up with an idea by simply making this list.
- 2). Do some research on the hobbies you wrote in the list. Research can be done by visiting a specialized hobby shop, searching online hobby shops that cater to that hobby or by browsing catalogs and niche magazines.
- 3). Keep an eye out for something new. During your research, you may find that a new item or gadget has recently come out. This may be the perfect gift. For example, if your birthday person loves golf, you may find out that a new club is on the market during your research.
- 4). Try coming up with ideas that relate to the person's job if researching hobbies doesn't work and repeat Steps 1 to 3. Items that aid in making a job easier or more relaxing is always a welcomed gift. For example, a manager of a small business may find an hands-free ear piece for her cellphone a nice gift.
- 5). Use relaxation gifts as a gift if all else fails. Bath salts, massage pillows, aromatherapy candles, desk fountains and other soothing items are great generic gifts that most people can appreciate.
