- 1). Put on gardening gloves. They will help prevent scratches from thorns and the shears you will use.
- 2). Assess your rose bush, finding the first cane you wish to prune.
- 3). Cut the cane below the leaf and above the bud, at a 45-degree angle. Make sure the cane you are cutting is pointing away from the bud.
- 4). Trim each section of the plant, cutting all canes with clean strokes. Ragged cuts increase the chance of insect infestation.
- 5). Look for dead canes, which will be brown or yellow, with no green leaves growing from them. Remove these canes.
- 6). Apply sealing compound to the cut areas to protect the plant from insect or disease infestation. White glue works well.
