- 1). Check for mechanical problems that may be causing poor handling. If your Jeep is out of alignment, has loose or broken u-joints or wheel bearings or any other problems with the suspension or steering system, these should be tightened and repaired by your mechanic first to see if they significantly improve your steering.
- 2). Upgrade your suspension. The Jeep YJ has a fairly stiff suspension system, designed for taking a beating off-road on the trails. If you do not operate your vehicle off-road very often, you can upgrade your Jeep to a softer suspension package that will provide a smoother ride and improve handling on paved roadways during regular driving.
- 3). Avoid putting larger tires or a lift on your Jeep. These are common modifications for Jeeps because they improve off-road capabilities and appearance; however, both lifts and larger tires affect handling and cause the vehicle to have a rougher ride.
- 4). Install tires and rims designed to improve performance. Performance tires and rims can provide better stability and traction for your Jeep.
- 5). Install an aftermarket steering dampener. The steering dampener works to provide tighter, more sensitive steering for your Jeep and is a common aftermarket modification for Jeep YJ models.
