- 1). Buy a small potted lemon tree in March after the last freeze of the season. If you buy the lemon tree before this, you need to keep it in the pot inside your home so it doesn't freeze.
- 2). Locate a spot to plant the lemon tree. Ideally, the tree will be on the south side of the house to block winter winds and receive at least six hours of sun daily.
- 3). Dig a hole that is slightly shallower than the root system.
- 4). Remove the tree from the pot and place it in the center of the hole. Cover the hole with the dirt you removed. Press the dirt firmly in place.
- 5). Water the plant daily for the first three to five days. After this, decrease watering to once a week. If it rains that week, you do not need to water.
