- Popping and clicking sounds occur when the outer CV joint is going bad. This occurs when the car is making a 90-degree turn, such as turning a corner. The sound is more pronounced when the car is in reverse.
- A clunking sound while the car is accelerating is a sign the inner joint which is connected to the transmission is bad. Like the outer joints, the sound is more pronounced when the car is in reverse.
- The CV joints have boots similar to the boots at the base of a manual shift lever. The boot keeps lubricant in and contaminants out. Loss of lubricant can occur when the boots get old and worn or damaged by road debris. Prevention of premature failure of the CV joints starts by periodically inspecting the boots. If a boot is damaged, it can be replaced before any major damage can occur.
