Untapable wins the Mother Goose Stakes
June 28, 2014
The $300,000 Mother Goose Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park features some of the best 3-year-old fillies of the east going 1 1/16 miles on the main track under sunny skies and temperatures in the mid 80's for the 5,165 fans in attendance.
With Black-Eyed Susan (G2) winner Stopchargingmaria scratched on race day, just five went to the gate, with Rachel Alexandra (G3), Fair Grounds Oaks (G2), and Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner Untapable sent off as the prohibitive 1-20 favorite.
In to challenge her included 8-1 second choice Princess Violet, winner of two straight in allowance company, and 9-1 third choice House Rules, sixth in the Acorn (G1) last out. Show wagering was cancelled due to the short field and Untapable's prohibitively low odds.
Princess Violet set fractions of 23.30, 45.95, and 1:09.65 while stalked by 20-1 America and favorite Untapable. Entering the stretch, new jockey John Velazquez, replacing the injured Rosie Napravnik, asked Untapable for run and she easily took over, opening up a 6 length lead midstretch through 1 mile in 1:34.57 and finished 9 1/4 lengths clear in 1:41.48 over the fast main track. It was just a neck between Princess Violet and third place finisher America.

Untapable walks down Victory Lane
Winning jockey John Velazquez said, "She's been inside before. The only concern I had was that another horse went left leaving the chute. I didn't hesitate at all. I got her out of there. After that, it was pretty easy. I put her into the clear, she settled really well, and it was a nice ride. I just kind of put my hands down and I was confident I could give her the opportunity she needed."
Untapable in the winner's circle
Winning trainer Steve Asmussen said, "I'm very pleased with her race today. I loved how quiet she was pre-race and in the paddock. She turned off right after a little trouble at the start and was pretty relaxed. She picked it up when she needed to and appeared to be looking around quite a bit in the stretch, but it was her first time (at Belmont). All of her previous victories had been where she was training, so I think that this was a pretty good step.
I think she's a very special filly."
Second place finisher Princess Violet
8-1 second choice Princess Violet set the pace under Jose Ortiz but was no match for the winner. The Mike Hushion trainee improved her record to 2 wins and 2 seconds in 4 starts, earning $134,610 for owner-breeder Barry Schwartz.
Third place finisher America
20-1 fourth choice America stalked the pace under Irad Ortiz Jr. and just missed second place money. The Bill Mott trainee improved her record to 1 win, 0 seconds, and 2 thirds in 7 starts, earning $135,340 for owner-breeder Bobby Flay.

Winning trainer Bill Mott said, "I think the longer distances have probably helped her. She broke a little slow, so she was fourth instead of second or third, but she was still within range of the leaders. She rated very nicely and kicked very well. She punched pretty good off a slow pace. We have nothing planned for her right now. It's too close to run her back in the Diana, so she won't do that."
Jockey Joel Rosario added, "Last time, there was no speed.
Today, I just let her run her race. I rode her in Florida when she came from off the pace. She can do anything. She's a little filly, but it looks like she can do a lot of things. I tried to get on the outside. I didn't want to be caught wide, but I wanted a clean trip and not get stuck inside. She got the job done today."
