How to Propagate Cold Hardy Bamboo

    • 1). Examine a clump of bamboo prior to separating it. Select smaller outlying plants that are growing some distance apart from their nearest neighbor to avoid disturbing the root system too much when you dig the plant up.

    • 2). Cut back the bamboo that you plan to transplant with branch loppers or a hand saw so that each stem in the bamboo clump is only three or four nodes long. This will help to reduce transplant shock.

    • 3). Dig a trench into the ground between the bamboo stem, which is called a culm and the nearest neighboring bamboo stem.

    • 4). Dig all around the rhizome of the plant when you uncover it.

    • 5). Cut the rhizome in two using pruning shears or branch loppers. If the rhizome is too thick for either pruning shears or branch loppers, you can separate it using a mattock.

    • 6). Dig up the smaller bamboo by the roots. You will be able to transplant this bamboo to a new location.
