There has been a lot of talk in the past few years on the importance of getting into social networking, and most recently into Twitter. While I do believe it helps grow and nuture a brand, I'm not going to toot that horn.

Instead, I'd like to press the issue of design within those networks and why hiring a designer and actually spending some money is better than attempting it yourself. There are many programs and applications out there that are cheap and fairly simple to use for the average person. That doesn't mean you should use them. Designing something yourself does have a joyous appeal to it, but is it the right thing to do for you? Most often it is not.

You don't need to go over the top or keep it too simple. Get your ideas out of your brain. You need to know what you want to convey to your audience of clients and potential clients so you can easilly and efficiently build the bridge from your brain to the designer's.

Once you've got your game plan together, shop around. While a Twitter background designer is most definitely going to do a better job than you are, not all designers are perfect for you and your business. Look at portfolios, send some emails, and make connections. The only way for you to ensure a great design is made is to do the ground work.

Like most business decisions the more time you spend researching, the better the decision and final product. So, get a plan, do the ground work, and spend a few bucks.
