Following on from a massive introduction to Melbourne in the early 1950's, Scientology continued to grow from its premises in Spring Street, across the road from the Victorian State Parliament building.
In late 1959 the founder of the Church of Scientology, Mr.
L.
Ron Hubbard, visited Melbourne.
It was at this time that he personally delivered what is known as the Melbourne Congress - a gathering of Scientologists, who over the space of a couple of days were treated to a series of lectures from Mr.
Hubbard on the latest advances in the subject of Scientology.
Upon the completion of the Melbourne Congress, L.
Ron Hubbard then held the Melbourne ACC, or Advanced Clinical Course, which was designed to teach more advanced students of Scientology the breakthroughs of the previous months.
More specifically Mr.
Hubbard delineated his research into his goal of discovering how to produce spiritual freedom and the various factors preventing people from achieving this state.
L.
Ron Hubbard also covered the ability to create and confront, and developed the historic Melbourne Processes, still used by Scientology practitioners (called auditors) today.
Mr.
Hubbard covered what the effects of the "tremendous quantities of space" in Australia have on its residents, and the specific manifestations and characteristics of Australians when compared to their South African and English counterparts.
The Melbourne Congress and Advanced Clinical Course acted as a catalyst to expand Scientology all over Australia.
Scientologists who attended the Congress and ACC, returned to Adelaide and opened the Adelaide Mission and later formed it into a full blown Church of Scientology.
One of the Scientology Church staff members, the Director of Training Perth attended the ACC, returned to Perth and over the next two years and with the contributions of many eager Perth Scientologists, turned Perth into a full fledged Scientology Organization by 1962 under the watchful eye of Melbourne the Melbourne Church.
The history of the Church of Scientology is an interesting one, and one which is linked to the bigger history of Melbourne.
