- 1). Select old hard-cover books to make into your secret box. You can find old hard covered books at yard sales, thrift stores and book sales for a reasonable amount. The book should be fairly thick and hard bound. You can even read the book first and then recycle it into a secret box.
- 2). Open the book about one-third of the way into the pages. Use a ruler and draw a rectangular box onto the page on the right that is at least two or three inches in from all sides of the page. You can make it smaller, depending on your needs.
- 3). Use a box cutter or exacto knife to cut through as many pages as possible, following the lines of the square or rectangle that you drew. Remove the cut paper and discard it. Turn the cut pages, so that you can continue cutting out your secret box. Continue cutting until only one-third of the book pages remain at the back of the book.
- 4). Measure the size of the section you cut out, across and lengthwise. Measure the depth of the box you cut out of the book pages. For example, if the hole in the pages is four inches wide and the depth of the hole is two inches, the measurement you are looking for is eight inches in all for that side.
- 5). Cut a piece of felt or cloth to measure the full 8-inches across and whatever the other measurement equals if it is rectangle. This piece of cloth will be the bottom and sides of your secret box. Lay the open book on a flat surface. Cut out the four corners of the cloth according to your measurements. Spread some glue on the bottom of the secret box and up the sides of the cut pages. Insert the piece of cloth into the secret hole and press it into the glue to hold it into place.
- 6). Cut a piece of ribbon so that it can be placed in the open book. It should be long enough so that ribbon sticks out the top and bottom of the book. Glue the ribbon to the book's page as close to the binding as possible. Allow everything to dry overnight.
