- Pomegranate fruits develop from the flowers approximately five to seven months after the flowers develop and are pollinated. While not all flowers turn into a pomegranate, as the pollination rate is less than 100 percent, picking flowers reduces the quantity of fruit to come.
- Pomegranate flowers are attractive and have homeopathic and craft applications. The flowers can make a fabric dye, and they can be dried and used to cure bronchitis or sore throats according to a 1987 article by Julia F. Morton published by Purdue University.
- Pomegranate trees develop best in areas with low humidity. If you're growing pomegranates in a humid climate, they'll flower but have reduced fruit development due to the weather. Thus, picking and enjoying the flowers might be better than waiting for fruit. Double-flowering trees also don't fruit well, so feel free to pick their flowers. In these cases, there's little fruit to worry about protecting.
