- Stepladders are only safe when the condition of the ladder is checked every time prior to use. Support legs, especially on the fiberglass stepladders, can get crushed by dropping the ladder against a hard surface. The seams on the fiberglass U-shaped channel can crack. A stepladder in this condition should be discarded.
Wooden stepladders can become loose over many years of use. The step support rods should be tightened. Use a pair of pliers can to tighten the small nuts located on the support rods below each step on the ladder.
Aluminum stepladders can twist if placed on an uneven slope. It is not advisable to bend the ladder back into shape, as this action can fatigue and damage the structure of the metal. Discard an aluminum ladder in this condition. - Place a stepladder of any type on a firm, level and dry surface. Setting the legs of a ladder on muddy ground can cause the legs to become unbalanced. The weight of your body can twist the frame of the stepladder even more, causing it to move and lose footing.
A level support surface is important, as weight on the legs of an uneven ladder can cause the stepladder to "walk" from its original position. When the legs of a stepladder move, it can cause the occupant to lose his or her balance and fall.
Likewise, erecting a stepladder on a wet or slick floor can cause the ladder to move out with the first footfall on the lowest step. - Never exceed the recommended height of any stepladder. These rules are printed on every stepladder sold in the United States. Placing your body above the center of gravity for the four legs of the stepladder can cause it to "walk out" from under you.
Do not run up or down the ladder or jump from the steps. The ladder can kick out and fall.
Stand comfortably on the ladder and come down when you begin to feel tired. Any amount of time in excess of ½ hour will generally begin to fatigue your legs.
Do not lean a stepladder against a building. The footing of a stepladder's legs are not made for this type of position. The ladder can push out from under your body.
